During WWII, masses of unpretentious Danish citizens rose to defend the dignity and life of their fellow citizens who happened to be Jews. What was the reason the Danes behaved differently?

World War II shook the world and left us with an indelible moral lesson. Pulped were both the strategic and political lessons from which humanity will benefit in the third millennium. The lesson in civility, morality and Citizenship, delivered by the small European kingdom Denmark, has remained intact for over 60 years.

Indeed the essence and importance of this lesson for the future of our civilization, was the decisive impetus for the publication of this book in Russian.

The essence of this lesson is that ordinary people, who were neither heroes, nor familiar or fond of their fellows Jews, did not allow the national and foreign forces to divide their citizens along religious lines and racial prejudice. Ordinary Danes defied the German political and military machine, which by that time had enslaved Europe.

How did it happen that this small kingdom in which Shakespeare saw dark spots of history gave such a clear lesson to European civilization? We may look for an answer in the fact that they grew up on the tales of Hans Christian Andersen … but so did the other children of Europe.

Masses of unpretentious Danish citizens rose to defend the dignity and life of their fellow citizens who happened to be Jews. What was the reason the Danes behaved differently? Was it just another case of the Danish boy that dared to state: “The Emperor is naked”?
